Cloudy Bay

Cloudy Bay

Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay is a cornerstone in catapulting New Zealand’s Marlborough region into the international wine scene. Situated in the stunning Wairau Valley, within the northern reaches of New Zealand’s South Island, Cloudy Bay benefits from a cool climate and ideal grape-growing conditions, contributing to its renowned wine quality.

The brainchild of Australian winemaker David Hohnen, Cloudy Bay was inspired by the bay that lies to the east of the vineyard. The winery’s debut vintage, a Sauvignon Blanc, launched in the same year as its establishment, quickly garnered global acclaim.

Cloudy Bay is dedicated to sustainable viticulture practices and meticulous vineyard management, consistently producing exceptional Sauvignon Blanc. Over the years, Cloudy Bay has expanded its wine portfolio to include other distinguished varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

In the early 2000s, luxury conglomerate LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) acquired Cloudy Bay, originally part of Cape Mentelle within the Estate Brands group. This acquisition has further solidified Cloudy Bay’s reputation as a leading producer in New Zealand’s wine industry, combining tradition with innovation to create wines that reflect the unique terroir of Marlborough.
