There are few regions in the world that can trace its exact history. The first vines were planted by Dutch settlers to Constantia in the late 17th Century, making it the oldest “new” world wine region of all. The vineyards were first planted by Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the Cape Colony, which laid the groundwork for the next three centuries.
Over the years, Constantia has become synonymous with Vin de Constance, a luscious and aromatic sweet wine that has gained international acclaim. Historically enjoyed by European nobility and even Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile. The soils are primarily composed of Table Mountain sandstone. Proximity to the ocean and constant breezes make it a cool climate region, well suited to producing fine aromatic whites from Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, amongst others.
