Over five hundred years, the Philipponnat name has woven an indelible mark across the premier terroirs of the Southern Montagne de Reims. The family's story began with the purchase of Le Léon, a vineyard between Dizy and Ay, in 1522. Five centuries later, this historic plot remains the beating heart of the aptly named 1522 cuvées – the Blanc 2019 and Rosé 2018, both offered today.
Philipponnat has a wonderfully simple formula for crafting its traditional 1522 blends, a ‘recipe’ developed by Charles’ father, René Philipponnat, while he was Chef de Cave at Dom Perignon (from 1949 to 1979). Ripe and powerful Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Le Leon is blended with racier more electric Grand Cru Pinot Noir from the Northern slopes, alongside Grand Cru Chardonnay from the finest sites in the Côte des Blancs, with judicious oak maturation adding another layer of texture and complexity.
The result in the 1522 Blanc 2019 and Rosé 2018 is a brace of releases with profound clarity and precision, their fresher, more focused style beautifully framing the richness and generosity that make Philipponnat so distinctive. They are more delicate and ethereal than many of the great renditions of 1522, yet have lost none of Philipponnat’s unmistakable depth and luxurianc
The 2019 1522 Blanc, containing Pinot from the Grand Crus of Verzy and Mailly and Chardonnay from Mesnil sur Oger, is wonderfully alive and energetic, with elegant citrus fruits, high-toned florality and mouthwatering chalky minerality. Sapid, mint-flecked red fruits and toast emerge on the finish. There is real tension here, but also generosity – delivering a wine that marries laser-like precision with rich, flamboyant fruit.
The 1522 Rosé is perhaps even more seductive. Cool, crushed red fruits and rose petals drift from the glass, followed by subtle spice and a wonderfully vinous richness. The addition of still red wine from Clos des Goisses gives the wine beautiful depth and savoury complexity, making this a rosé Champagne that is every bit as compelling at the table as it is on its own. Sumptuous, perfumed and wonderfully textured, it is one of the finest rosé Champagnes Philipponnat has produced.

“The 2019 Extra Brut 1522 is superb. Soaring floral top notes lead into kirsch, lemon confit, mint and chalk. Tropical overtones follow, adding layers of dimension and complexity. All this needs is a bit more time in bottle to be at its most expressive. There's a lot of wine here. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: October 2025.” 94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, Drink 2026-2036
“The 2018 Extra Brut Rosé 1522 is another superb wine in Philipponnat's 1522 series. Crushed rose petal, cranberry, mint, chalk and white pepper blossom in a rich, vinous Rosé Champagne. It will make a terrific aperitif but also has enough complexity and dynamic energy to be a fine companion at the dinner table.” 94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, Drink 2026-2036
