Piero Busso’s Striking 2021s – A Wine Advocate “Rising Star”

We have sung the praises of Barbaresco winery Piero Busso many times since we started working together (for the 2013 vintage). Young Pierguido Busso has gone from strength to strength and become a name on the lips of many of the region’s most acclaimed producers. A charming, friendly and jovial family unified by a love for beautifully etched, traditionally-styled Barbaresco, the Busso wines delight for their unusual combination of grace, succulence and power.

2021 ranks amongst the finest vintages of this Piedmont generation. Indeed, Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate has spotlighted Piero Busso in her latest article titled “Rising Stars”, extolling the virtues of the dynamic siblings Pierguido and Emanuela. An organic and biodynamic winery with holdings in historic Neive vineyards Albesani and Gallina, and Treiso’s cooler San Stunet, their Barbaresco wines are delightful and full of character. We take the opportunity to reproduce her commentary and are pleased to offer the two 2021s at their original release prices.

“I remain profoundly impressed—and genuinely enthusiastic—about a new generation that has managed, against all odds, to carve out space and truly shine in Barolo and Barbaresco.” – Monica Larner.

The Piero Busso 2021 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is a dense and austere expression marked by darker fruit tones, pronounced depth and firmly structured tannins that immediately set it apart. The palate shows power paired with finesse, delivering ripe fruit wrapped in a more contracted and serious frame that will need time to fully reveal its potential. Sourced from vines dating back to 1948 rooted in limestone-rich clay soils without sand, this “vineyard of the heart” is fermented in wooden vats and aged in large Slavonian and Central European oak casks, underscoring its long-term ambition. – 95pts, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate.

The Piero Busso 2021 Barbaresco San Stunet is delicate and finely etched, emphasizing floral aromas of violets and subtle fruit over weight or power. Situated at 420 meters with a southeast exposure, the wine showcases the estate’s ability to translate altitude into aromatic precision. This Barbaresco highlights the advantages of small-scale farming, where attention to detail drives elegance and clarity. – 94pts, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate.
