Champagne for serious entertaining – in bottles and magnums.
With August approaching it’s time to get down to the serious business of holidays and summer entertaining. As far as we’re concerned, whether it’s a party for one or a shindig for many, one ingredient that is guaranteed to set things off on the right foot is good Champagne.
Today’s trio is a shortlist of genuinely entertaining bottles, the sort of Champagnes that cause a raised eyebrow from those in the know – at prices that allow for maximum generosity and rolling good times.
Quentin Paillard’s Parcelles hails exclusively from the family’s vineyards in the Grand Cru Village of Bouzy. It’s a 70/30 Pinot/Chardonnay blend, aged in wood, with low dosage but high Bouzy ripeness. The result is crystalline sunshine, sharply rendered bubbles, and plenty of fine intensity; perfect for those moments when you’re in something crisp and linen, feeling fresh, with an evening of possibility ahead.
Jerome Dehours’ Grande Reserve cuvee is so named because of the huge amounts of perpetual reserve in the blend. Combine this rich and complex elixir, which dates back to 1998, with the fruits of Jerome’s attentive farming regime, and you get a Meunier dominant, umami rich, gastronomic Champagne of huge charm and generosity. Laid back vibes and deep conversations might pair particularly well here.
And last but very much not least, Philipponnat’s Reserve Perpetuelle Non Dosé, which has over 50% reserve wine in the blend, this time coming from Charles Philipponnat’s double perpetual reserve system. To our tasebuds, this is a Non Dosé sweet spot – the ripe Pinot Noir that characterises the house style is the ideal candidate for the Zero Dosage treatment. The result is crisp, cleansing, and invigorating, brilliant with shellfish, caviar and all manner of good things from the sea.
