We are delighted to release the 2025 Chardonnay and 2024 Pinot Noir from Storm Wines. Quality as ever is exceptionally high, the 2025 vintage marked by welcome winter rains and a long dry run-up to harvest, imbuing the Vrede and Ridge Chardonnays with an extra sense of poise and stature this year. Vrede shows a little more style and structure at the beginning, Ridge following up with a focused, lemony-slender lightly smoky edge, enhanced by a 10% clay amphora component in the blend for the first time. Both offer an enticing mix of substance and saline freshness, with judicious French oak toast. The only downside is that they are in short supply.
The 2024 Pinot vintage began cool with extreme winds and rains impacting the flowering of the vines and reducing yields from the outset. However, the ripening period from December 2023 to March 2024 enjoyed warm temperatures resulting in better-than-ever levels of concentration and a deeper tannic finesse, important in the context of a young wine region. Harvest itself was short and sharp, finishing about a week earlier than in 2023. Though down in quantity (20hl/ha on average) compared to the previous two years, they are the best reds yet and endorse Hannes’ view that the combination of increasing vine age, sufficient water supply, a new cellar, and reliable conglomerate corks means they are “hitting a Purple Patch”, turning out incredible wines befitting their reputation as the best in South Africa.
