Unsurprisingly, our savvy customers have a sharp eye for a bargain as you all went to town on our Spring sale this week, snapping up hundreds of cases in double time. Whilst several lines have now sold out for good, there remains a lot of great wine available at unbeatable prices. Here are some of our favourites you might have overlooked, all of which are drinking well now….
Starting with a fine Champagne, this is a rare Blanc de Blancs from Grand Cru Bouzy. Whilst 2017 was challenging for many, a combination of very old vines, the village’s warm, south-east facing slopes and the Paillard brothers’ skill rendered this gorgeous, rich yet pure Chardonnay, vinified in oak and drinking exceptionally well right now.
From Rebholz in Germany’s Pfalz we have this extremely grown-up Grand Cru Pinot Blanc, which James Suckling awarded 98 points, comparing it with Grand Cru Burgundy (for a fraction of the price). The ancient limestone soils yield a structured, stony, citrusy white, with tense orchard fruit and whispers of spice, for drinking now or over the next five years.
For a white in a completely different, more round and exuberant mould, why not try the Chardonnay from New Zealand’s famous Cloudy Bay? This is ripe, put still carries excellent acidity which keeps the stone fruits nicely perky and drives a lovely persistence on the palate. Fully ready, though it will keep another couple of years.
If you haven’t yet tasted the Grenache from South Africa’s David & Nadia, it is a must for summer drinking. Pale in colour, but fleshy on the palate, this offers lovely high-toned red fruits and a balanced weight which matches food (especially BBQ!) really well. It is a sophisticated, intellectual Grenache at a much more moderate alcohol level than its Rhône-derived cousins. One for drinking now or over the next couple of years, we think.
Finally, for a truly classic Left Bank claret, Potensac has long-been a reliable go-to. From the same stable as Léoville Las Cases, though hailing from the northern Médoc, we were thrilled to pick up a parcel at a good price from the lauded (and now fully-ready) 2009 vintage. This displays all the fine graphite and cedar notes you might look for, alongside the attractive, ripe black fruits. The tannins are now well integrated and this will be singing in your glass any time from now and over the next 7-10 years.
