Port Ellen, 40 Year Old, Islay, 9 Rogue Casks, 1979
Some casks are born different. Port Ellen prizes these ‘Rogue’ casks. They are an inspiration for a distillery that has always followed its own heart, instead of the rules. When the master distiller discovered 9 of these casks from 1979 he saw an exciting opportunity to create something special. The 5 American Oak Hogsheads and 4 European Oak Sherry Butts each instilled their individual character, gifting us with delicate, herbaceousness, burnt tangerine skin, pronounced bonfire smoke, pipe tobacco, leather and wood spice.

5 American Oak Hogsheads, 4 Ex-Sherry Butts
Delicately, grassy on the nose, with burned tangerine skin and very mild smoke at cask strength which opens up a little with the addition of water - leading into roasted coffee, red fruit compote, ripe peach skin. Much more pronounced bonfire smoke on the palate with pipe tobacco, leather and wood spice.
