Whilst picking favourites in a universally excellent vintage is a tough ask, this is exactly what we asked our private client team to do, for those still in need of recommendations. Whilst our offer proudly caters to a diverse range of styles and price points, these were some of their personal top choices:
"Full of dense and brooding dark cherry and plum on the nose. This gives way to brighter red cherry and blackcaurrants on the palate. There’s plenty of fine, powdery tannin to buttress the fruit and a long, undulating finish with layers of spice and forest floor notes. Superb!" - George Wilmoth, Private Client Director
"Ca’Mia is a 65-year-old monopole vineyard with good amounts of limestone soils. High toned and complex; the 2021 has so much going on, with mixed berry fruits, cherry, menthol, herbs and liquorice. Detailed and transparent – this is a wine made in the vineyard, showcasing the fine terroir beautifully. The energetic finish is very long and entices you back for another sip. This is a highly recommended option for lovers of traditional Barolo." - Peter Ogilvy-Wedderburn, Private Client Account Manager
"From one of the finest vineyards in the region, Roberto Voerzio's Brunate stood apart from all other wines at the tasting for me. The nose is deep, broad, complex and assertive, with bold but exquisitely balanced fruit and a signature blue fruit note which I loved. When drinking Roberto’s wines, you taste nothing but class; you can see how much time, work and money has gone into making them. Although the price might seem high, that's because these stand a step above the rest." - Ludovic Beresford, Private Client Manager
"The Bussia Vigna Fantini was one of my standout wines at the recent Piedmont tasting. Scavino has long owned a small plot in Bussia, but until now, the grapes had only contributed to other wines in their range. Recognising the exceptional quality of this fruit, they’ve finally given it the spotlight it deserves - and I’m so glad they did. This is a bold, powerful Barolo, brimming with dark black fruits, intertwined with spice and a hint of smoke. It’s beautifully balanced, with vibrant acidity and velvety tannins, leading to a long, fascinating finish. I have to agree with Antonio Galloni - this is a tremendous debut. I can't wait to see how it evolves over time." - Toby Watson, Associate Private Client Manager
"The whole Altare range was excellent this year, the best I think I have ever tasted from this renowned estate. It would be easy to pick the stunning (and more expensive) UnoPerUno as a favourite, but I want to call out the Arborina. Derived from the old vines planted next to the winery in La Morra, some planted almost 80 years ago, this is usually fairly bold and structured, but in 2021 the fruit is so forward, supple and charming that you initially don’t notice the tannins. They’re there, but perfectly formed and in harmony with the sweet and polished fruit, everything balanced – the hallmark of a great vintage." - James Burt, Private Client Manager
