La Croix Ducru Beaucaillou, St Julien, 2022
This is another second wine with grand vin pretentions. The best Croix we can recall, this is aromatically complex, beautifully textured, and encased in alluring tannins. The nose displays hints of iodine and citrus rind alongside blackcurrant, damson, bramble and spearmint, crushed rock, truffle and griotte cherry. This has real presence on the mid-palate with lots of floral raspberry, boysenberry and Chambord flavours supported by large-scale but perfectly ripe, nuanced tannins. Persistent and layered, this grows in stature, fanning out over the long and distinguished finish. A very sophisticated second label.
critic reviews
This is strong on Merlot at 66%, with 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. The élevage here was in about 80% new oak, for 12 months. Dark and quite perfumed, with a little crystalline note to the nose, with red cherry and cranberry, and a touch of rose petal, and darker notes of currant. The palate feels restrained, nicely defined, elegantly poised, with a very traditional backbone of firm tannins streaked with black pepper which only really shows in the finish. Very savoury, drily composed, this calls to mind an old-school style but in a top vintage, long and gripped, the ripeness of the tannins and the intertwined saline freshness providing plenty of pleasure. One for the cellar. The alcohol on the label is 14%.
Intense, concentrated, succulent, bitter cocoa bean and mint leaf, dark berry fruit, this is capturing the spirit of the vintage but giving it a sleek, confident accent, packed with sinewy tannins, and floral accents. 80% new oak for ageing, harvest September 7 to October 4. An upscore since En Primeur.
The 2022 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou has a wonderful, beautifully defined bouquet with pure blackberry, briar and cedar scents becoming ever more floral as it opens in the glass. It's concentrated but very well controlled. The palate is medium-bodied, tensile and poised with saturated tannins, a keen line of acidity and a sophisticated, persistent finish. This is a seriously fine Deuxième Vin that should require three or four years in bottle.
The 2022 La Croix de Beaucaillou opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper and fresh mint, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a deep core of fruit framed by chunky tannins, it's a blend of 66% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot.
