Le Clarte de Haut Brion, Pessac Léognan, 2021

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Made from declassified fruit from La Mission and Haut Brion. Open and generous but a little more serious and streamlined than usual. Satisfying, fresh and fruit-forward offering crystallised lemon rind fruit, developing into ruby grapefruit and a lemon sherbet tang. A blend of 56% Semillon 44% Sauvignon.

La Clarte de Haut-Brion 2021 springs from the glass with vibrant notes of yellow apples, poached pears, and lemon drops, followed by hints of lime leaves and chalk dust. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing and expressive, with vivacious citrus and apple flavors and a chalky finish.

If you are going to pick a 2nd wine in the 2021 vintage, I strongly recommend heading to the whites. Hard to go wrong here, with its grip and pummice-stone tension, savoury white pear and mouthwatering lime zest, citrus peel, excellent quality. Has a clear intensity to it, a slate-textured finish and fleshy but pared-back pear fruits. 45% new barrels, and lower alcohols than over the past few years (as with the whole Haut-Brion range). Harvest from September 3 to 13.

The 2021 La Clarté de Haut-Brion has an attractive nose: pineapple less evident than it was from barrel, perhaps now just a tad more resinous in style. The palate is well-balanced with a keen line of acidity, not a complex white Bordeaux per se, but it reveals admirable tension on the finish.

The 2021 La Clarte de Haut-Brion offers up a floral, lively bouquet with aromas of lemon, white flowers, herbs and menthol, followed by a medium to full-bodied, tense and precise palate that segues into a saline, fresh and penetrating finish. This is a blend of 55% Semillon and 45% Sauvignon Blanc.
