Chateau Montlandrie, Cotes de Castillon, 2022
This is the third vintage made by Noémie Durantou and Olivier Gautrat, and for us the most successful range to date. From the juicy griotte character of the Saintayme to the imperious L'Eglise Clinet, every wine displays its distinctive terroir signature with aplomb. Of all the Durantou satellite wines, Montlandrie is perhaps the most consistently high performing. The blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon planted on Castillon clay soils yields wonderful, intriguing aromas of creme de mûre, smoke and black plum. This is taut and powerful with plenty of concentration and a persistence to the powdery, cassis and mineral infused tannins. Perhaps a little more backward than others in the range, this composed, reserved Montlandrie has masses of potential.
critic reviews
A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from Noëmie Durantou, the élevage here was in 50% new oak. A completely different aromatic expression to Les Cruzelles here, more pure and perfumed, a little more Cabernet in style, with notes of liquorice, currant and gorse flower. An elegantly polished palate follows, the dark currant and summer berry fruit intertwined with tobacco and cigar oak, but draped in a modest textural blanket over a rich bed of tightly knit tannins which play a much larger role in the grip and structure shown on the finish. Long and gripped, this shows its limestone origins with a bright sense of éclat and a long bite of chalky tannins at the end. One for the cellar. Tasted twice. The alcohol is 14.5% on analysis.
The depth of flavour is more clear, along with the fragrance of the freshly cut and dried herbs - white pepper, sage, turmeric, cloves, incense, very much coming in on the retro-olfaction, deep black cherry, just beautifully characterful, great stuff, easy one to recommend, 50% new oak, clay limestone really doing its absolute best.
The 2022 Montlandrie, which came across more like a Left Bank wine out of barrel, veers back toward Côtes de Castillon now that it is in bottle. This is quite opulent yet deftly controlled on the nose, with copious black fruit, vanilla extract, violet and dark chocolate aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and touches of graphite coming through on the linear finish. It has beautiful balance and wonderful fruit purity, sashaying along with style. This is excellent.
Notes of sweet cherries, berries, licorice and smoke preface the 2022 Montlandrie, a medium to full-bodied, suave and vibrant wine with a deep core of fruit, lively acids, powdery tannins and a saline finish. This vibrant, intensely flavored Cotes de Castillon is once again one of Bordeaux's best values in this vintage.
