justerini & brooks tasting note

Pierre-Olivier Clouet and Arnaud de Laforcade are forging a very successful partnership at Cheval Blanc. It can't be a coincidence that their tenure, alongside their very impressive new winery has lifted the quality and resulted in a slight, but profound change in style at Cheval Blanc. Recent vintages display laser like precision. The flavours are so fine and detailed and the tannins have this wonderful velour texture. This is such an assured, confident Cheval. There is certainly a lot of substance and some glorious fruit and floral character, however, it never comes across as a fruit bomb. Plush, svelte, mineral with sumptuous mouth coating tannins, this is a very grown up and serious Cheval Blanc. 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc.

critic reviews

95/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2014 Cheval Blanc does not convey the same sophistication and panache as the Angélus. This is more rugged and earthier, quite powerful with pencil lead and sous-bois aromas developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of blackberry laced with cedar, mint, fruitcake and white pepper notes. It finishes with some style and it feels very long on the finish. I just think that unlike Angélus this is going to need several years to really knit together. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
