Château Grand Village

Château Grand Village, Rouge, Bordeaux Supérieur, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

The Guinaudeau team fought the elements at Chateau Lafleur on the nights of the 27th and 28th of April. Thankfully they won and Lafleur was saved from the ravages of the frost. Alas, Grand Villages was left unprotected and was ravished. The Merlots situated on the clay-limestone fared best. 90% of the vineyard was affected. The decision was brutal but necessary, everything that had been touched by frost was pruned. Produced from 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the Grand Village 2017 will be a rarefied wine, just 9% of a normal crop. That's a great shame as it continues the impeccable run of vintages made at the Guinaudeau's home estate. Aromatically quite closed, this is all about texture at this early stage - pure, seductive Merlot fruits, gentle and refined with pretty mineral touches and ample bright red berry fruit. This is lacy and detailed with exceptionally elegant tannins. It's a shame it'll be so scarce!

A blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Grand Village, the fruit of a frosty vintage, displays a dense, racy bouquet with aromas of strawberries, plums, dark wild berries, pencil lead and flowers intertwined with spicy hints. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and sappy, its enveloping core of vibrant fruit is underpinned by velvety tannins. Dense, long, and energetic, the finish is endless. Balanced and harmonious, its a great effort.

The 2017 Grand Village comes mainly from the clay-limestone plateau that survived the frost that reduced production to only 9% of normal. "We were hit quite badly with frost in 2017 but we found by June that some vines were acting weird" Omri Ram told me when I visited Lafleur. "So we pruned back very early to help the vines get back into shape." It has a potent bouquet with mulberry, lavender and hoisin aromas. The floral aspect becomes stronger and stronger with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannins on the entry, quite spicy and a little chewier than recent vintages. Slightly bitter towards the finish with a strong black pepper note on the aftertaste. There is in fact, less Grand Village than Lafleur this year!
