The Ried Spitzerberg is the top wine of the estate, a selection of the oldest plots of the site with a hard limestone base. A big step up in complexity here, blending sappy red fruit and fresh herbal aromatics on the nose with deeper more complex fruit on the palate. Excellent and clear delineation of flavours with fine, sweet tannins finishing on salt. Very long on the finish and shimmering in a linear style, balancing 2017’s natural generosity of fruit. Bottled at a very moderate 13%.

From the upper part of the cru (300 meters above sea level), the 2017 Prellenkirchen Ried Spitzerberg 1OTW opens with a deep, complex and concentrated as well pure and very refined bouquet of potted wild strawberries, crushed limestone, autumn leaves, dried flowers (violets, licorice), herbs, kernels and stems. Full-bodied, intense and complex on the palate yet pure and concentrated, this is a seriously tight and salty, sustainable Blaufrankisch with fresh tannins and a linear course on the palate. The 2017 is still young and hiding its talents behind austerity, so give it some years for the wine to show its true virtues. Tasted in March 2020.
