    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Marquis de Calon Ségur 2024 offers a pleasingly glossy profile, with bright damson fruit taking centre stage. It benefits from a plot of Merlot that normally goes into the Grand Vin. A nice perfume lifts the aromas, leading to clear and direct flavours on the palate. The tannins feel well-judged, providing gentle support. Crafted from a blend of Merlot (63%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (37%) resulting in a wine of balance and charm with a relatively modest 13.2% of alcohol.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored. Features spritely notes of crushed red currants and fresh strawberries, followed by nuances of dried Provence herbs and pencil shavings. The savory, light to medium-bodied palate is light on its feet with racy acidity and soft, well-managed tannins, finishing on a pure red berry note.

The 2024 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, matured in 20% new French oak for a planned 17 months, is missing some fruit concentration on the nose. Therefore, it comes across a little austere, especially when compared to recent vintages. The palate is simple with rounded tannins, fine acidity, light spiced black fruit and touches of brown spices on the finish. But it just lacks some bite and complexity, so this is one for earlier drinking.

Slim and supple, savoury blue fruits, shot through with campfire and liquorice, crayon and roses, well handled in the vintage. Good Margaux typicity and has ageing ability in the mid term. Harvest 25 September to 4 October. 40% new oak. Now including the vines from Château Marojallia, but also reducing the percentage of 1st wine overall, so really focusing on the best plots.
