Croix Canon, St Emilion, Grand Cru, 2019
Croix Canon hails from a plot between Berliquet and the main limestone vineyards of Canon. Under the stewardship of Nicolas Audebert and Thomas Duclot, both Canon and Croix Canon have gained another dimension. The 2019 is beautifully perfumed with aromas of black plum, Asian spices, tilled earth and iris. There’s a plushness and modernity to the sumptuous fruit core. It’s quite dark and brooding with suggestions of hedgerow fruits and graphite interspersed with hints of redcurrants. As one would expect from this address, the tannins are refined and long, finishing with a refreshing saline bite. Re-tasted October 2025.
critic reviews
The 2019 Croix Canon has a classically-styled bouquet with tobacco and cedar infused black fruit, more Left than Right Bank. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, but this is well-balanced, quite old school in style with a fresh, sapid finish. I can imagine finishing a bottle easily, though it needs cellar time. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
From sandy soils on the plain, below Berliquet and next to Jonathan Maltus' new winery, the 2019 Croix Canon offers up aromas of raspberries, plums, loamy soil and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, ample and charming, with melting tannins and succulent acids, it's already drinking well.
