Never the most famous Sauternes but perennially a favourite of ours. We loved it for its unique mix of intensity, lightness and transparency. The 2016 does not disappoint. Lifted, bright notes of pale honey and lemon blossom. Intense and refreshing lemon zest flavours. A clear, fresh fruitiness and minerality that fuse seamlessly with richer notes of apricot and wild honey. The most moreish, lively and balanced Sauternes we tasted. Wonderful. A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon. It is a year where there was lots of botrytis early, the first “trie” represented 25 percent of the final blend which is rare. Harvest was between the 28th September and 28th October.
Doisy-Védrines is a 2ème Cru Classé Sauternes which belongs to the long-established Castéja wine family, and remains relatively little known by most wine lovers, due mainly to tiny production levels. The wines are renowned for their relative intensity and richness compared to Doisy-Daëne next door, but they are nevertheless far from being a heavyweight by the standards of the appellation. Their second wine, Petit-Védrines, is an exceptional value.
