Les Champs Libres, 2021

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Les Champs Libres, 2021

Like the Grand Villages Blanc, this is a beneficiary of the new dedicated white wine cellar. Backward and brooding initially, but with great intensity and precision. A very serious white that needs time. A little aeration gradually peels back some of its layers, tense lemon, lime and white currant fruit, with touches of dry stones and rock salt. Un-waveringly linear and long with expansive mineral notes echoing on the finish. A grand white from Bordeaux, as opposed to a Bordeaux white, this is a truly transcendental wine. Founded in 2013 by Julie and Baptiste Guinaudeau, Les Champs Libres is a reflection of the Lafleur philosophy through a white wine. Les Champs Libres originates from the clay-limestone soils on the plateau of Louima, a great match with their loire-originated Sauvignon Blanc genetics. 100% Sauvignon Blanc picked on the 9 and 11 September. Aged in barrels, 30% new (but very neutral) oak.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Pale gold colour, with steel and flint immediately apparent on the nose. Opens to show white pear, apple, grated ginger, salted cracker, tight and concentrated, real depth through the core. You can drink it now but will improve further. Harvest September 9 to 11. 100% aged in barrels. Look out also for the Grand Village Blanc from the same team.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

The 2021 Les Champs Libres is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from clay on limestone, harvested on 9 and 11 September. The nose is tight and closed, revealing yeasty notes over a core of lime leaves, green apples, and wet pebbles, with wafts of coriander seed and sea spray. Light to medium-bodied, the palate vibrates with energy from tightly wound citrus and apple layers and a laser-precise backbone of acidity, finishing long and minerally.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2021 Les Champs Libres, from white clay soils, has a less yeasty nose than I noticed from barrel, gaining more refinement as I suspected. Scents of dried white flowers and candle wax are well defined, developing crushed limestone notes with aeration. The palate is very well-balanced with orange pith, citrus peel, hints of white peach and mango toward the finish. There’s a lovely underlying tropical element here with a hint of lemongrass on the aftertaste. Excellent.

Château Grand Village

Château Grand Village

Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau’s home estate is situated in the commune of Mouillac in the canton of Fronsac. Over a third of Grand Village is planted with vines in the best and most suitable plots for viticulture. The rest of the estate is woodland or is used to rear cattle or produce cereal crops. It is an enchanting estate and one that despite its lowly appellation is capable of producing excellent wines. The estate also houses the family’s massale selection nurseries. The healthy virgin soils in a rich bio-diversity provide the favourable conditions to nurture old Bouchet cuttings from Chateau Lafleur.

The same 15 strong team who tend the vines at Chateau Lafleur is responsible for the viticulture and wine-making here. With all the resources and savoir-faire of one of Pomerol’s elite estates at their disposal, it is no surprise that the wines produced at Grand Village are spectacular. From the 2013 vintage, a new cuvee produced exclusively from Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc clones has been bottled. ‘Les Champs Libres’ is a miniscule production that demonstrates the outstanding quality of the terroir and the talent and ambition of the Grand Village team. It is fermented and aged entirely in new Taransaud barrels and marries the intensity and laser like focus of great Sauvignon Blanc to the gunflint and silken texture of something altogether more Burgundian.
