Château La Fleur de Boüard, Lalande de Pomerol, 2016

Hubert de Bouard's property in Lalande de Pomerol usually represents excellent value for money, and 2016 is no exception. Like Hubert's flagship estate, Chateau Angelus, the 2016 Fleur de Bouard has a little more precision and elegance than normal. Produced from 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, there are notes of flowers, herbs, cassis and hedgerow fruit. It is lithe with good purity of fruit and an impressive mineral quality. There is admirable concentration, with good energy, some salty notes and a well-managed tannic structure.

The 2016 La Fleur de Boüard has an attractive bouquet of bilberry and blueberry fruit laced with graphite and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and quite linear in style at the moment. More red fruit develops toward the sappy finish. This is a pleasurable La Fleur de Boüard, although it needs more charm.

    Château La Fleur de Boüard

Hubert de Bouard as one of the grand statesmen of St Emilion. His tenure at Chateau Angelus has coincided with a tremendous run of form. He now owns both a sizable share in neighbouring property Bellevue and his own Lalande de Pomerol estate, La Fleur de Bouard. The same meticulous attention to detail is afforded to all estates, and this is regularly the best wine in the commune A wine that displays far more class than its humble appellation suggests and a wine that will reward cellaring.
