La Fleur Petrus is always one of the most sought-after wines from Bordeaux. The original estate is a little over 9 hectares and is situated next to, you guessed it, Chateau Lafleur and Petrus. This terroir is unsurprisingly capable of producing exquisite wines. Now, the vines from Chateau Providence and a new parcel situated between Le Pin and Trotanoy (formally called Chateau Guillot) have swelled the estate to 18 hectares, making this the largest property on the plateau. There has been a real step up in quality here in the last few years, and the 2019 continues that trend - it may well rival the exquisite 2016 and 2018. Produced from 92% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, this is every bit as striking and aromatic as the 2018 with added freshness and a touch more verve. It’s more reserved than the hedonistic Hosanna, but it follows a similar profile of black cherry, Asian spice, black tea leaves, liquorice and hint of clay. The palate is really handsome, with swathes of crème de mûre, pure loganberry, spice and gravelly cassis. This has wonderful control and tension. The core is tightly wound, restrained and serious. Pure and ravishing, this is a really multidimensional La Fleur Petrus, it effortlessly paints the palate with pure griotte and complex minerals without any sense of weight. As ever, the tannins are beautifully integrated, weaving a rich tapestry of flavours, tantalising the taste buds. A glorious, sumptuous La Fleur Petrus.
