Château La Lagune
Perched on a gentle gravel rise above the Gironde in Ludon-Médoc, Château La Lagune occupies one of the southernmost outposts of classified growth territory. Founded in the 16th century on reclaimed marshland, the estate’s name recalls the small lagoon that once marked its boundary. Awarded Troisième Cru status in 1855, it has long stood as a singular voice within the Haut-Médoc, marrying the depth and authority of great Cabernet terroir with an uncommon grace and charm.
Revived by Georges Brunet in the 1950s and today guided by Caroline Frey, La Lagune has evolved into a benchmark for precision and balance. The 80-hectare vineyard is planted on classic Médoc gravel interspersed with sand and clay, the plantings dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot lending flesh and perfume. Under Caroline Frey’s tenure, the domaine has embraced organic and biodynamic viticulture, achieving Biodyvin certification and a genuine sense of ecological harmony in the vineyard.
Winemaking here is measured and exacting: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats is followed by 18 months’ élevage in French oak, around half of which is new, allowing the clarity of fruit and the finesse of the terroir to shine through. The resulting wines are beautifully proportioned—structured yet supple, perfumed with violets, cassis and graphite, and shaped by a purity and poise that have become the estate’s modern signature. Château La Lagune today stands among the most elegant of the Left Bank crus, a property defined by quiet confidence, precision and the enduring beauty of its terroir.
