Château La Mission Haut Brion, Cru Classé, Pessac Léognan, 2011
What can’t be denied is that La Mission Haut Brion is producing wine of First Growth quality – unfortunately for them, the market does not feel that they can command the same price. Epic wines in 2009 and 2010 have not been easy to sell as the Chateau’s questionable pricing strategy is in no way aligned with the wider market. The 2011 is another spellbinding effort, offering a beautiful bouquet of cut flowers, chocolate liqueurs, minerals and cassis. More pure, fresh, vivid fruit is evident on the attack; black, blue and red berries wash over the palate before the tell tale gravelly minerality and savoury character dominate. There is profound length and the fine, velvety tannins are sheer class. A very smart wine, which if priced correctly will be a must buy.
