Clos du Marquis, St Julien, 2009
Leoville Las Cases go to great pains to explain that Clos du Marquis comes from its own unique terroir, although some grand vin is declassified into the blend at the wine-maker's discretion, so definitely not a second wine... This is a big step up from Petit Lion. A beautiful nose of plum liqueur, minerals and cut flowers. The palate offers layer upon layer of searing cassis fruit; sweet, mineral, juicy mid palate. This is impressive, concentrated stuff, with well managed tannins and refreshing acidity. A beautiful Clos du Marquis.
critic reviews
The 2009 Clos du Marquis is tightly wound on the nose, gradually unfurling to reveal blackberry pastilles, boysenberry, pencil shaving and subtle mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, good weight in the mouth, and crisp acidity. Fresh and vibrant with a gentle grip on the finish that perhaps would benefit from more persistence. Otherwise this is very fine. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.
