This is light but well done with balance and careful extaction of gentle, soft berry fruits. Hardly any tannic frame at all, this is working with not against the vintage, careful winemaking if a little soft on the finish. Harvest September 30 to October 11.

The 2021 Mauvesin Barton is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot, with yields of only 20 hl/ha due to frost. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it features bold notes of redcurrant preserves, Morello cherries, and wild strawberries, plus hints of lavender, wild thyme, and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate delivers a firm, grainy texture and oodles of freshness to support the intense red berry layers, finishing with a skip in its step.

The 2021 Mauvisin Barton has a well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed iris flower and a hint of cinnamon. Very classic in style, it’s nicely focused with neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with more tension than the Deuxième Vin and gentle grip. Quite juicy in style thanks to the 48% Merlot, a pinch of cracked black pepper emerges toward the finish, tingling on the aftertaste.

    Château Mauvesin Barton

Anthony Barton's new venture in Moulis promises to be a big favourite amongst the legion of Barton devotees. Previously called Chateau Mauvesin, the estate dates back to 1457 and once held Cru Bourgeois status. Lilian and her husband will live in the beautiful Lodoïs Leblanc Chateau with the previous owner’s very elderly mother (one of the terms of the sale). The Bartons have already made considerable investment and will no doubt bring all their wine making savoir faire to this new acquisition. We expect the quality to soar, so one to watch for the future…
