    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Moulin St Georges occupies a great position just to the southeast of St Emilion town on clay and limestone soils. The father and daughter team of Alain and Pauline Vauthier at neighbouring Chateau Ausone, tend the vines. Produced from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, as usual there is more than a hint of hedgerow fruit, fresh herbs, ferrous notes, tobacco, dried fruits and wildflowers. The palate is packed with notes of creme de mûre - sweet and unctuous, but taut and vibrant. Finishes with plenty of energy and notes of cassis, blackberry and salts.

This is a traditional blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with an élevage lasting 18 months in oak barrels, using 100% new oak, with a gentle toast. Sweet confit blackcurrants and blackberries on the nose, with black bean, rose petal and sooty complexities. The palate presents the same fragrant and cleanly defined fruit character, supported by a rich grip of tannins, very pure and firmly composed, with fresh acidity. A finely structured finish, with a rounding up of the tannins and fragrant fruit into a decent length. A very convincing Moulin Saint-Georges this year, elegant but with great cellaring potential. The confit concentration is matched by a higher alcohol here, declared on the label as 15%, which does not show on the palate. It will be fascinating to see how this ages.

This has the joy of 2022 with the depth of Moulin St Georges, salty, saline, oyster shell, juicy, crushed rocks, coffee, cocoa bean, liquorice, espresso, saffron and sage. 100% new oak. Harvest September 19 to 26. A buy, wonderful stuff from the team at Ausone.

The 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges has really opened up on the nose since tasting from barrel. It's plusher and opulent than it showed then, with layers of black cherry, cassis fruit, orange pith and glycerine. The palate is medium-bodied and velvety smooth, with lush tannins and a dash of cracked black pepper on the finish. There is structure and sapidity here. This is a stylish Moulin Saint-Georges that should age well.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, the 2022 Moulin St Georges is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a taut, chalky profile. It should flesh out further with additional elevage.
