Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Cru Classé Pessac Léognan, 2013

Daniel and Florence Cathiard have transformed this estate from virtual obscurity into one of the finest and most consistent performers not only in Pessac but in the whole of Bordeaux. There is always a gloss and sheen to the wines from this estate. The 2013 is produced from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Perfumed and polished with notes of flowers and little blackcurrants interspersed with cranberries. There is good depth of fruit; it really is quite lavish for the vintage. Good texture, with a finish of kirsch and a hint of Valrhona chocolate.
