Château Suduiraut, 1er Cru Classé, Sauternes, 2022
Delicate floral notes combined with plenty of honeyed citrus notes on palate. A refined, quietly intense effort that impresses for its overall balance. You feel this has the presence to last a few years in a very un-shouty way. Typical suduiraut, understated and majoring on elegance. A blend of 92% Semillon and 7% Sauvignon.
critic reviews
The 2022 Suduiraut conveys a sense of sophistication on the nose, very well defined and a little oakier, but there is complexity. The palate is wonderful, with superb delineation, pure botrytised fruit, gentle grip and genuine mineralité on the finish. This might well constitute the best Sauternes that you can buy in 2022. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.
This cuvée is pure Semillon, and the residual sugar is 190 g/l in this vintage. A rich, smoky-gold hue in the glass, the nose is similarly smoky and harmonious, with a huge intensity of dried citrus and tropical fruits, all orange, mango and coconut, a substantial and cohesive build. Despite this, as well as the huge and voluptuous texture on the palate, there is a sense of freshness here, the creamed weight of white peach, mango, melon and white chalk countered by a white pepper energy and bright central acidity. Beautifully bitter in the finish, this is a towering collection of components at the moment, but given time it will be a brilliant Sauternes. Leave alone for ten or twenty years. Very impressive, bright and fresh. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 13.4%.
The 2022 Suduiraut reveals a deep, complex bouquet of ripe orchard fruits, caramel, spices and mango. Medium to full-bodied, enveloping and mouth-coating, its long and fleshy with great depth at the core and a long, mineral, orchard fruits-inflected finish. Entirely crafted from Semillon and matured for 18 months in barrels (70% were new barrels), this is a classic in the making and a superb Sauternes. This has 190 grams per liter of residual sugar.
Amber in colour, with tropical fruits of passion fruit and mango on the opening beats, clear depth of flavour and contrast provided by orange peel and aniseed bitterness, low acidity. Luscious, silky, powerful, enjoyable. Pierre Montégut technical director, 7hl/h yields, 70% new barrels 30% from barrels of one vintage.
