La Chenade, Lalande de Pomerol, 2023
Denis Durantou is famed for his wonderful Pomerol estate, Chateau L'Eglise Clinet, but he has spread his wings to St Emilion, Lalande de Pomerol and Castillon, and it is perhaps in these communes that he has best demonstrated his Midas touch. Year after year, the likes of La Chenade and Montlandrie have topped our best value poll, and now we are seeing Saintayme and Cruzelles appearing there too. This 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc cuvee from gravel parcels in Lalande de Pomerol has an intensely Burgundian profile. Ripe damsons, strawberries, bright wild berries and spice leap from the glass. The palate has layers of bright, intense fruit; a vital Chenade with plenty of tension and appeal.
critic reviews
The 2023 La Chenade has a little more brightness and delineation compared to the Saintayme at the moment. Red cherry mixed with raspberry and just a hint of truffle in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with saturated tannins that lend this a fleshy mouthfeel. There is a bit more tension and "bite" compared to the Saintayme, with ample weight and precision on the finish. This is a lovely Lalande de Pomerol to enjoy over the next 12 to 18 years.
La Chenade 2023 is 100% Merlot and is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of blueberry pie, juicy raspberries, and Morello cherries erupt from the glass, leading to hints of graphite, dried herbs, and wafts of tar. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of juicy black fruits, supported by grainy tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long and earthy.
Bright vivid colour; raspberry fruits on the first attack, shot though with grilled cedar, salted caramel, liqourice and gentle acidities, unfussy and enjoyable. 40% new oak, harvest September 13, 40% new oak for ageing.
The 2023 La Chenade shows a dark, somber profile, evoking aromas of gentian, licorice, mulberries and violet. Medium-bodied with a layered and rich palate, its creamy and enrobing with velvety tannins and a long, firm finish. It was made entirely from Merlot grapes that are matured in new oak barrels, comprising 40% of the total.
