Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru, 2020
Opening with a brooding intensity and a subdued smoky oak nose, this is equally reticent on the palate initially. However, the depth and gravitas of this wine is clear to see. Profound golden fruit with notes of butter, acacia, citrus and an underlying earthiness. Long, layered and assured. A fine parcel of Bâtard on the Puligny side of the vineyard near Pierre Morey's vines, abutting Montrachet. Fermentation and élévage take place in 350 litre barrels, with no bâtonnage, for 12 months before six months in stainless steel.
critic reviews
The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a brilliantly defined bouquet of tensile citrus fruit, petrichor and just a touch of dewy meadow. The fresh, taut palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, focused and saline. It tightens up toward the austere finish. There is not a huge difference between this and the Les Referts and Folatières, to be honest, but it remains a bona fide stupendous white Burgundy.
