Puligny-Montrachet, Les Referts, 1er Cru, 2020
Fuller and more closed than the Garenne, this offers rich golden fruit with excellent acidity – dense yellow plum notes with an earthy undertow, spicy notes and citrus freshness accompanying the finish. From vines older than 50 years planted on heavier, more compact clay soils than Perrières and Garenne, the resultant wine is often therefore at the richer end of the spectrum.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet les Referts 1er Cru is more backward on the nose compared to Sauzet’s other Premier Cru, though it opens with aeration, hints of pressed yellow flowers, saffron and citrus peel. The palate is very taut and focused, the oak beautifully integrated, hints of apricot and Clementine towards the oh-so-pretty finish. This will be gorgeous once in bottle.
