    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Génot Boulanger, Puligny Montrachet, Les Garennes, 1er Cru, 2018

A typically slight and rocky Garenne but with no lack of ripeness. Long, focused flavours of crushed stones and yellow plums. There is a dancing, airy quality to this, it moves lightly across your palate. Fine-tuned and with a bit of crunch to it. Spritely Puligny. A south-east facing vineyard, high up the hill just below the forest, planted on white, rocky limestone soils with fossils in the subsoil. A cool and mineral terroir. Aged in 20% new oak for 12 months followed by six months in tank.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru comes from 0.35 hectares of vine located toward the southern flank. It has a lightly spiced bouquet, quite forward and slightly nutty in style, more like a Meursault. The palate is well balanced with red apple, orange pith and tangerine on the entry, a fine bead of acidity and good depth. What I would like to see is more Puligny-like character here, something that I think would be expressed more in a cooler growing season. A capable La Garenne, but I suspect there are better ones in other vintages.
