Beaune, Clos des Mouches, 1er Cru, Rouge, 2018
A bold and broad as ever but with a tactile, svelte quality you don't often find in young Clos des Mouches. Surprisingly open and floral, the mid palate offers a welcome bit of crunch and freshness to the kirsch and raspberry liqueur fruit. Juicy, ripe and slick. Fermented with 25% whole bunches. This is the Drouhin flagship vineyard; half of which is planted to Chardonnay and half to Pinot Noir. Situated mid slope with a fine east and south-east exposure, producing intense, spicy, round wines. Ageing is for 15 months in 25% new oak barrels.
critic reviews
The 2018 Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 1er Cru, which includes 25% whole clusters and a maximum of 25% new oak, has a well-defined nose with dark cherries, raspberry and perhaps less of the blueberry element that I remarked upon from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a very smooth texture, fleshy and generous with a cashmere textured second half. This lovely, beguiling Clos des Mouches embraces the warmth and precocity of the growing season, and as such, it will be irresistible in its youth.
