    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, Viré Clessé, 2022

A different profile to the Clos du Four, much fruitier and more floral but with a complexity and sophistication nonetheless. A subtle grip adds welcome bite to the alluring and aromatic yellow plum, orchard fruit and citrus characteristics. Full of beauty and energy, delivered seamlessly and with composure, this is the complete package! From a selection within 7ha that was originally part of the Château de Viré estate that Dominique Lafon acquired in 2009. Only a small proportion actually goes into this wine, the rest is declassified into Mâcon Villages. The vines are old, up to 75 years old, and are a massale selection of the rare muscat variety of Chardonnay.

The 2022 Viré-Clessé comes from several parcels that, unlike the previous vintage, includes "younger" vines around 20 years old. It has an attractive bouquet of yellow flowers and a touch of peach skin. Fine delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a saline entry. Fine depth with impressive persistency. Recommended.

    Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon

    Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon

Dominique Lafon had been eyeing land and property in the Maconnais for some time before he eventually bought some cellars and vineyards around the village of Milly. Here he recognised an opportunity to produce fine wine, terroir-rich, wines that would not cost the earth. The quality and attention to detail is the same here as it is at the Domaine des Comtes Lafon estate in Meursault. Farming is biodynamic, fermentation is in tank plot by plot, and ageing is tailored to each terroir, in a mixture of steel tanks, wooden foudres, and demi-muid oak casks. Dominique has a wonderful spread of vines at his disposal from accross the region, showing how diverse and interesting the Maconnais can be. From the old vines of Viré-Clessé producing floral, expressive wines to the more mineral intensity of Macon-Milly, and the racy and intense en Chatenay Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard of Vergisson.
