Volnay, Champans, 1er Cru, 2013
The most voluptuous and generous of the Domaine's Volnays, this caresses the palate with its smooth yet bright red berry and damson fruit flavours. Suave but with a fine tannic spice, ripe but lively and fresh; as seductive and harmonious a Volnay you could find. A big vineyard in the middle of prime Premier Cru Volnay territory on the south side of the village below Taillepieds, well-exposed to the south-east. The soil is redder here than higher up the slope. At the top of the vineyard the soil is very rocky but becomes deeper and more clay influenced towards the bottom of the slope, giving some of the most complete Volnays that, despite ageing very well, can be extremely rewarding in youth.
critic reviews
Bright medium red. Alluring superripe aromas of black cherry, mint and bitter chocolate: I would have guessed that this wine was vinified with some whole clusters but in fact it was entirely destemmed. A rather powerful Volnay with a slightly high-toned, almost porty ripeness to its black cherry, dark berry and chocolate flavors, but strong, slightly peppery acidity gives it a penetrating, somewhat disjointed quality in the early going. This deep, chewy Volnay finishes with big, granular tannins and excellent persistence.
