Volnay, Les Fremiets, 1er Cru, 2021
A totally different profile from its neighbour Clos des Angles – more intense, firmer and darker in fruit profile. Packed with crunchy plum, bullace and bramble fruit gripped by smooth but dense tannic framework; a complex, characterful, high-impact Volnay of stature. This hails from a clay dominated vineyard on the north side of the village, further up the hill from Clos des Angles, and so the soil is less deep here – the resulting wine is more structured and mineral.
critic reviews
The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet opens in the glass with aromas of exotic spices, wild berries, orange zest and forest floor, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate underpinned by lively acids and powdery tannins.
The 2021 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a very pure and open bouquet, perfumed red cherry and wild strawberry fruit laced with wilted rose petals. Not powerful yet nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle but insistent grip, more structure than the Clos des Angles with a touch of white pepper towards the finish. Fine persistence. This is a Volnay to cherish over the next 15-20 years.
