Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Paul Pillot, Chassagne Montrachet, Rouge, Clos St Jean, 1er Cru, 2021

Wilting roses are one element of a highly complex florality that defines the nose of Clos St Jean rouge. This has gorgeous complexity and a truly ethereal feel. Fine silk tannins propel this across the palate with perfumed notes of dried and wildflowers and wild red fruits. Somehow, there’s a sense of romance in this cuvée. Don’t miss it. Fermented with 100% whole bunches, this is a vineyard with a great reputation for making red wine, the stunning Clos has poorer soils than many of the other, more clay dominated vineyards in Chassagne such as Morgeot, and the result is wines of greater finesse.

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean 1er Cru (Rouge) offers brambly red fruit on the nose, light tertiary scents, iodine and white pepper from the whole bunches of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a little rustic and simple but clean and focused on the mulberry finish.

Paul Pillot

The young Thierry Pillot has turned this domaine not only into one of the greats of Chassagne, but one of the very top domaines in the whole of the Côte d'Or. His skill and enthusiasm coupled with truly fabulous vineyard holdings (which include Caillerets, La Romanee and Grande Ruchottes) make a formidable combination. Thierry favours wines of tension and transparency, he achieves this through not picking too late and reducing the influence of oak in the ageing process. The wines are rarely matured in more than 10% new oak and he uses a mixture of barrique and larger demi-muids barrels. Scintillating, vivid Burgundies that offer a clear lens on terroir.
