Sylvain Cathiard, Vosne Romanée, Aux Malconsorts, 1er Cru, 2008

Richer than the Nuits Murgers but seemingly less heavy, very Vosne, really lacy and silky, bright smooth black cherry, bramble and Victoria plum fruit, notes of plum skin, cherry stone and mineral too, bursting with life and fruit, wonderfully elegant despite its richness, floral and long on the finish.

The 2010 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru is one of the few vintages that I have never tasted (or at least, I have no record of it). It is typical Cathiard on the nose with a dense wave of blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit, quite bold and powerful. The palate is muscular with a fine structure, not quite impenetrable, yet there is something about this Malconsorts where it does not want to let you in. Grippy on the finish, the tannins have mellowed over the years, but there is some way to go. Give this another three to four years. Tasted at dinner in Crystal Palace.
