Sancerre, Le Chêne Marchand

Sancerre, Le Chêne Marchand, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Often likened to one of Sancerre’s “grand crus”, Le Chêne Marchand comes from one of Bué’s most celebrated lieux-dits, planted between 1959 and 2005 on stony white Oxfordian limestone. Aged on lees for 12 months in 600 litre barrels, the 2023 offers a compelling balance of power and precision. Aromas of ripe citrus, nectarine and peach lead into a broad, layered palate of fleshy stone fruit. The structure is firm yet elegant, supported by a chalky freshness that brings energy and focus, while a touch of orange pith adds subtle grip on the finish.

critic reviews

93/100Rebecca Gibb,Vinous

The 2022 Chêne Marchand is a richly fruited wine offering creamy notes and ripe peach fruit. While it's an opulent style for a Sancerre, it never becomes heavy, plus it has an almost tannic edge, providing a frame and reassuring structure that grips the palate, suggesting that this has longevity. There's a fine, briny character throughout. Having tasted the killer 1996 vintage a few minutes afterward, you can be sure this wine has a long life ahead.
