Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Zilliken, Saarburger Rausch, Riesling, Auslese, VDP Auction Release 2019, 2018

An intriguing Auslese that comes from a single four-year-old barrel, with fantastic definition and grip – much more so than the regular bottling. Lime zest and lime marmalade combine with ripe apricot and guava as this textured, almost tannic Auslese asserts itself, gripping the palate. Concentrated and almost chewy. Very impressive. Bottled at 110 grams of residual sugar.

This auctioned Auslese introduces a measure of lemon-lime citricity and a primary juiciness that would have been welcome in this year’s auction Spätlese (A.P. #7), and the similar prominence of quince and pear jellies is thereby cut and enlivened. Tangy pineapple core and bittersweet cassis contribute to the wine’s welcome animation, while the confitured orchard fruits take on a lightly caramelized edge and are joined by mango, a familiar feature from upper-Prädikat Zilliken offerings. The palate impression is dense and downright viscous but also seductively creamy in texture, setting up a lovely counterpoint with the fresh and zesty citricity as well as with the hint of resin and tannin from a fairly new fuder. The correspondingly multifaceted finish is vibrantly as well as lusciously persistent.

The life of a Saar Riesling grower is not an easy one. Possibly one of the coldest and most marginal corners of Germany, the Saar can produce some of the world’s great white wine in hot sunny years such as 1990. However, these are usually outnumbered by cold wet years resulting in over astringent and unripe wines. There are a small band of growers though who have a distinct advantage over the rest in the land that they own. A handful of Saar vineyards are steep enough and exposed enough to ensure a decent level of grape ripening even in poor years. Hanno Zilliken is fortunate enough to have sizeable holdings in Saarburg’s great vineyard, the steep south-facing Rausch. He exploits these slate based vines to the maximum through careful pruning and hand selection. When the wine is pressed, it gently descends by gravity into the oak casks lying in Hanno’s dark damp cellars. The wines are prime examples of Saar Riesling, being mouthwateringly taut, mineral and sophisticated.
