Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Emrich Schönleber, Lenz, Riesling, 2022

Lean, crystalline and persistent with some citrus and essential oils, really a lovely delicate and mouthwatering entry-level. Between a third and 50% fruit from the Frühlingsplätzchen, the soils here comprised of mostly red slate and loam. Just above a Trocken level of residual sugar and bottled at 11.5% alcohol.

ABV:
11.5%
87/100
Anne Krebiehl, Vinous

The 2022 Riesling Lenz is not legally dry, but Schönleber wants the wine to come across as dry. It was harvested from the young vines in the Frühlingsplätzchen and on the extension of the Frühlingsplätzchen in the village of Weiler on red soil with slightly more red loam. The nose is redolent of crunchy ripe red apples. The palate falls into step, referencing citrus and coming on light feet with vivid fruitiness and a zesty lemony finish. At 12.5 g/l of residual sugar and 8.3 g/l of acidity, the finish still comes across as dry and bright - not off-dry yet. (Dry)

Emrich Schönleber

Emrich Schönleber

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
