Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Emrich Schönleber, Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen, Riesling, Spätlese, 2022

Lively and juicy with a little wild ferment note, the acidity is present and stimulating; a basis for an array of vibrant dancing fruits and pockets of slate on a complex, beautifully balanced finish.

The 2022 Riesling Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen Spätlese is made without any botrytis. It was whole-bunch pressed with different press fractions fermented separately to maintain absolute tone. A touch of reduction is followed by candied Amalfi lemon peel inflected with gentle lemon balm notions. The palate is slender, beautifully tart, almost fizzing with lemon freshness. There is serenity, immense charm and exquisite lightness here. A cooling, like mint, note seems to rest on all the intense lemon flavors. Exquisitely balanced, wonderfully tart and lemony, the 2022 is only just sweet. Lemon brightness and ripeness echo long. Lovely. (Sweet)

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
