Riesling, Kastanianbusch, Grosses Gewächs, 2021

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

The great Kastanienbusch vineyard rises from 150m above sea level to over 300m and is formed of red iron rich soils that are around 320 million years old. It tends to produce complex powerful Riesling that is nevertheless transparent and full of energy. The GG is a very much dialled-up version of the Ortswein, being intensely ferric and slightly wild, with plenty of tropical fruits such as guava and pineapple, with peach, herbs, aloe and a great wash of citric acidity which zings across the palate. This is an animated, playful, fairly boisterous and hugely fun GG that tastes like little else in Germany.

critic reviews

91+/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2021 vintage was cool, rainy and late, but the 2021 Kastanienbusch Riesling GG opens surprisingly aromatic and fragrant with floral and fruity notes that are exotic and reminiscent of lychee; behind that are fine herbal notes and the unique soil from the Rotliegend period. Racy on the palate, really vital and lively, this is still a fountain of youth. On the finish, however, there is pointed, green acidity and notes of green, unripe apples with vegetal hints. In the end, this is a rather short Kastenienbusch that is characterized as much by the acidity as indeed by the stinginess of the vintage. The 2021 is a straightforward and racy Riesling without any ornamentation and, at this stage, is for purists only. Tasted at the Rebholz Kastanienbusch/Christmann Idig/Wittmann Morstein vertical tasting in Westhofen in August 2024.
