Barolo, Cerretta, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A lifting, fresh nose of aromatic red fruit and alpine herbs. Silkier than the sterner San Rocco, boasting sensual red berry and cherry fruit mixed with notes of wild herb, undergrowth, and a hint of salted blood orange. A charmer. 3000 bottles were made. The Azelias have one big block of 2.5ha here, but only 3500 bottles are produced as the Cru bottling. The wine is aged in one big barrel for 30 months. Most of the rest of the wine is declassified and blended into the Barolo. Originally, they rented the plot and they replanted it entirely while under rental agreement. They then bought ten years later. This was thirty years ago. It has been Luigi Scavino’s baby from start to finish. 2016 was the first vintage vinified separately. The soils are a blend of clay, limestone and chalk.

critic reviews

95/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The Azelia 2018 Barolo Cerretta is a bold and powerful expression with dark fruit, grilled herb and ferrous notes of rusty iron that stand out strong in this hot vintage. The wine tastes firm and almost salty on the palate with long, polished tannins. This bottle is a shiny gem in this estate portfolio.

The 2018 Azelia Barolo Ceretta has lots of immediate spice cream top notes combined with very clean new oak and flower notes. On standing, iris aromas appear. It is medium-bodied and has a beautiful flowing texture and weight - some of that weightless quality that great wines have - and elegant and refined savory tannins. It doesn't have huge concentration but is very charming and seductive. It might need more mid-palate concentration but has a beautiful drinkability and ease with juicy freshness. Drink now to 15 years.

The 2018 Barolo Cerretta is another wine in this range that comes across as dried out and lacking fruit, with only modest site expression. In 2018, the Cerretta is decidedly fleeting, with modest complexity and not much in the way of depth.
