Barolo, Massara, 2015
Radiant yet heady fruit. Very “Verduno” in style for its perfumed, explosive aromatics. The tannins are a little less silky and more edgy than those of Monvigliero but this is all part of the fun, character and energy of this wine, pairing well with the hugely joyful, gregarious ripe cherry and violet-tinged fruit. Sheer charm and joie de vivre. A south-east facing vineyard from Verduno, a commune influenced by the close proximity to the river where there are big day/night temperature differences that help build up aroma in the wines. Aged for three years in large slavonian oak casks.
critic reviews
Dark red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and spice notes emerge from the 2015 Barolo Massara. Rich and textured in the glass, with striking resonance, the Massara captures all the best the vintage has to offer in its enveloping, radiant personality. Even with all its obvious richness the 2015 remains vibrant and full of energy. It is also one of the more complete wines I have ever tasted from Castello di Verduno. Underbrush, menthol and dried flowers add the closing shades of nuance. What a gorgeous wine this is.
