Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Fratelli Alessandria, Barolo, San Lorenzo di Verduno, 2019

Limpid bright translucent ruby in colour, the 2019 San Lorenzo di Verduno leaps out of the glass with notes of freshly cut peach, blood orange and red plums. Silty, softer soils with limestone underpinning, San Lorenzo is the lower continuation of Monvigliero, and has the same south facing exposition producing wines of presence and finesse, with an extra layer of lovely glossy fruit. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in 25hl Slavonian oak cask for three years.

15%
93-95/100
Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2019 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno, tasted from barrel, is another potent wine from Alessandria. Heady and explosive, the 2019 possesses tremendous energy and drive from start to finish. Dark red fruit, gravel, incense, scorched earth, rose petal, licorice and iron are some of the many notes that race out of the glass. The 2019 is wild and racy, sort of like a misbehaved child, but in the best sense! I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Fratelli Alessandria

Fratelli Alessandria

An historic Verduno estate that dates back as far as the 8th century. A true family affair Vittore Alessandria, his mother Flavia, father Gian Battista & uncle Ale have been working hard in recent years to give more precision to their charming wines: more leaves, fewer treatments in the vineyards, along with the investment into a battery of Swiss coopered Slavonian oak botti have all helped to give increased focus to the wines. Made in a traditional and non-interventionist way, the wines are fermented gently and slowly before elevage in large oak cask for three years. These are some of the aromatic, elegant and charming Barolos you’ll find.
