Barolo, Santo Stefano di Perno, 2018
A wine of much darker fruits, while retaining the transparency of the Mascarello style. Not heavy, instead its Monforte origin is felt more in the tannins which have a firmness to them, as is typical. Fresh and intense with lavender, violet, blueberries, sage and fresh plum notes washing across the finish to leave a sweet and fruit-based impression. Perno appears particularly successful in 2018.
critic reviews
The 2018 Barolo Perno Vigna Santo Stefano comes from a site between Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba that maintains slightly cooler temperatures overall. Although Monprivato is the vineyard site most closely associated with the Mascarello family, they also have extensive experience farming here. In fact, the Mascarello family was among the first to draw importance to Perno. This wine shows a rich texture and darker aromas that tend to veer toward chestnut, hazelnut, truffle and dark fruit.
