Barolo, Bricco Viole, 2021

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

The Bricco delle Viole brings more substance and more tannins. It is darker and more serious in nature but with more complexity too. Produced from 70-80 year old vines inherited from Marco’s mother’s side of the family. Bricco Viole is a very fine Barolo vineyard that translates as ‘Top of the Violet Hill’ and is one of highest vineyards in the Barolo commune at 400–450 metres above sea level. Marco's windy, exposed parcel is blessed with a fair chunk of old vines. It is a late-ripening vineyard that produces small intense berries. Compared to Brunate there is a little more clay in the soil here. The ageing is the same as for Brunate, 24 months in barriques, with 15% new oak.

critic reviews

96/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Always one of my favorites in this portfolio, the M. Marengo 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole manages a beautiful balance between intensity and elegance. The wine is not timid, nor does it reveal all its secrets at once. It offers a slow-motion performance of redcurrant, crushed flower and sweet violet. As always, this Barolo produces a floral signature that makes it unique. That delicate characteristic is especially defined and vibrant in this vintage.

The 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is an especially deep, potent wine from this site. Red-toned fruit, pomegranate, blood orange, iron and chalk are all dialed up in this intense, bold Barolo from Marengo. There is certainly no shortage of stuffing here.
