justerini & brooks tasting note

An aromatic, fruity La Morra Barolo wit[h a bit of sinew binding the sweet red fruit together. Whilst relatively rich and round, there is life to the fruit. The red berry flavours are infused with fragrant notes of dried rose, finishing on a smooth generous kirsch note. Seductive. A very attractive ‘regular’ Barolo that is a blend of wine from Crus vineyards in La Morra including Croera (now known by its wider name Serradenari,) Roncaglie, Boiolo and Fossati. The wine is aged for 24 months in 20% new oak barriques.

The Marengo family has harnessed the sunshine and the soft warmth of this vintage with an expert touch. The 2015 Barolo (with fruit sourced from four different vineyards in La Morra) is a steady, rich and softly layered expression. The wine is slightly more accessible in the near term, yet there is enough fruit density and firmness to carry it forward in time. Marco Marengo is one of the most talented winemakers in La Morra, and I highly recommend this wine for those just getting to know the complex world of Nebbiolo. Some 7,400 bottles were made.

Marco Marengo's 2015 Barolo is lovely. Medium in body, gracious and lifted, the straight Barolo is a terrific wine in its peer group. Sweet red fruit and floral notes are front and center in a mid-weight, nuanced Barolo that speaks with a sense of energy. It is a terrific entry-level offering from Marengo. Drink it over the next decade.
