Barbaresco, Albesani-Borgese, 2016
Lovely, languid fluid and silky fruit with gentle supporting structure and tense acidity, attractive and crystalline. Strawberries muddled with cherry, pine, herb and mountain berries that float across the palate. A south west facing vineyard of 280 metres planted on sandy white limestone soils, originally planted by Pierguido's grandfather in 1948. Ageing is in 25 hl casks for 26 months.
critic reviews
The 2016 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is a heady, exotic wine. Super-ripe red cherry, raspberry, mint, blood orange and star anise give the 2016 a decidedly flamboyant profile. The alcohol (15%) feels a bit elevated, while the tannins are grainy. It will be interesting to see if time in bottle helps. Right now, the 2016 is decidedly awkward.
The Piero Busso 2016 Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese is a little riper and a little sweeter than the other Barbaresco samples submitted by this estate. The wine delivers lots of primary fruit with summer cherry, blackberry and a touch of peach or candied orange peel. Its primary fruit component is the protagonist, but elegant tones of spice, licorice and tar do play effective supporting roles.
